Grass species can be divided into two general categories: Psychophilic grass species and thermophilic grass species.

Psychophiles

Grass species that are considered to grow satisfactorily at temperatures from 15-24 o C are characterized by the retention of their green color throughout the year. In this category belong the varieties Lolium perenne L., Festuca arudinacea, Agrostis palustris etc.

Thermophiles

The types of grass that require temperatures 26-35 for their satisfactory growth are considered ο C. Their origin is from warm and tropical or semi-desert areas e.g. Africa, South America, India and Southeast Asia. During the winter they go dormant in order to cope with the low temperatures and lose their characteristic green color which returns in the spring. In this category belong the varieties Cynodon spp, Paspalum vaginatum, Pennisetum clandestinum etc.
