The most effective method of controlling wood-eating insects is fumigation using phosphine preparations. Phosphine is a gas that is characterized by the ability to penetrate all parts of the wood while causing the killing of all stages of evolution of the insect (egg, larva, nymph, perfect insect).

The application of the method requires proper preparation of the space which requires closing each opening (doors, windows, vents, etc.) in order to prevent gas leakage. Objects that may contain silver, copper or gold should also be removed or covered as there is a risk of oxidation.

Fumigation is also used in cases where there is a serious problem of crawling or flying insects, which can not be combated with the usual methods. It is considered the only effective method for the control of wood-eating insects (worms).
